I was given this ice cream for free through Ocado’s Star Reviewer system in which I am expected to leave my review on their site. It intrigued me enough that I thought I’d share my feelings about it here too.

For those of you that don’t know, I actually avoid dairy products as they don’t agree with me for some reason or another, so I was quite happy to try this vegan option.
My initial impression is that this is not ice cream. For the most part the texture lacks the creaminess that one would expect, it felt kind of ‘dry’ as if I were eating saw dust that had somehow been magically flavoured as ice cream. If you can get over that mental imagery hurdle then the flavour is actually quite nice. (Lucinda informs me that it’s likely the ground Almonds that create that dry texture, so perhaps the other flavours are better.)
I suppose it’s not entirely surprising considering the product is aiming to achieve status as the healthy ice cream snack, boasting a mere 320 calories in the tub. Other healthy ice cream brands have been criticized in the past for placing the calorie count for the whole tub on the packaging, citing that this encourages people to eat the whole tub in one sitting. Oppo has tastefully decided to put half the tub’s calorie count on this product instead. 😀

Do I recommend it? Well, I guess it depends what you’re after. It’s certainly not cheap at around £5 a tub. I think there’s tastier but unhealthier alternatives out there at that price and I’d rather consume one of those given the option. If you’re worried about the calories then perhaps just give ice cream a miss and your wallet will thank you too.
